While our staff is comprised mostly of year-round residents of the McCarthy-Kennicott area, we do have a few positions open each year for those who wish to be part of a unique remote Alaskan bush community – at least for a summer! But be warned, every year at least one first timer becomes a full time resident! After all, we are located at the very center of America’s largest national park, Wrangell-St. Elias.

When you work at McCarthy Lodge, you are part of the McCarthy-Kennicott community.  You are expected to act with dignity and respect for the community, park visitors, fellow staff, and area businesses.

Applications for the 2011 season are accepted between January 1st and March 31st 2011 for the following positions available in 2011. Our season is May 15th through September 15th. Eligible candidates will need to make the commitment to stay for the full season.

The Ma Johnson’s Hotel, part of the McCarthy Lodge, is a fully restored original boarding house built in 1923. Each of the 20 rooms is filled with original artifacts from the town. Open from May through September, – This position requires a personable and pleasant individual who is able to multitask. Strong organizational skills are essential. A keen interest in historical properties is a plus as the Ma Johnson’s is a “living museum”. Working with tour companies, individuals, international guests, and neighbors, our hotel receptionists are a critical position to our organization.

This 20 room hotel has a dynamic living presence and is a highlight of every visitor’s Alaskan adventure. Guests recognize the hotel as offering a genuine turn-of-the-century Alaskan experience. Tours of the hotel are often requested by visitors to McCarthy. McCarthy is a very remote truly Alaskan town (about 200 residents in the summer), supplies are flown in once a week, internet access is available by satellite, and there are not many services available. Surrounded by more mountains and glaciers than anywhere outside of Greenland and Antarctica, we are located in the largest protected, pristine wilderness in North America. This position includes taking guest reservations, shuttle driving, and some data entry. Must be over 25 years old and a clean driving record is mandatory.

Joshua Slaughter will be creating and implementing an education program in 2011 with Johnson & Wales Culinary Arts.   In 2011, kitchen staff will perform all functions of service.   Each station will be taught and rotated within the teaching environment of both working kitchens (Bistro & Saloon).     Excellent compensation and benefits for qualified candidates.
